foundation tools 101

There are a lot of different tools and ways you can use to apply your foundation today. Here are the different types of application tools that are used to apply foundation.

The traditional flat foundation brush

This is the most popular foundation brush available. It can be used by either patting the foundation onto the skin, or the more common way of swiping the foundation onto the skin, although be sure it doesn't leave any streak marks. By using this traditional foundation brush you will achieve a light to medium coverage of foundation. This brush can be used for Liquid or Cream foundations, along with BB creams and tinted moisturizers.

The flat top kabuki brush

This is my personal favourite brush to apply foundation with. It can be used by rubbing the brush in circular motions into the skin, or by dabbing the brush onto the skin. This brush creates a flawless look, is really good for covering up breakouts and is available with a short or long handle. This foundation brush can achieve a medium to full coverage look, and is most popular with liquid and powder foundations.

The stipping brush

This foundation brush is well known in the makeup world as a multitasking brush. It is used by either dabbing on foundation or stippling foundation into the skin; which is a twist-dabbing effect. This brush creates a airbrushed look and by using this brush you can achieve a light to medium coverage. Powder, liquid and cream foundations can be used with this brush.

The makeup sponges

These sponges are very popular for people who don't like to spend a lot of time on their makeup. They can be used by swiping the foundation onto the skin, or by patting it in. These sponges create a light to medium-full coverage look, but tend to soak a lot of foundation into the sponge. Liquid or cream foundations are mainly used with these sponges.

The beauty blender sponge

This is one of the most popular makeup applicators in the makeup industry at the moment. You apply the foundation by bouncing the sponge on the face. By slightly dampening the sponge, you can create an airbrushed look due to the sponge expanding in size. The beauty sponge can sheer down foundation but still keep coverage, therefore a light, medium or full coverage look can be achieved. It is mainly used with liquid or cream foundations, along with BB creams and tinted moisturizers.

The powder puffs

Powder puffs are typically used with powder foundation to set liquid or cream foundation. You use them by patting the powder onto the skin. They do an excellent job in setting other foundation, but I find when using powder foundation alone they don't work as well. You can buy them in packs of 2 or 3 and are easily found in priceline or other supermarkets and chemists.

  1. I'm in favour of the sponge, as I get the best coverage with it. I haven't tried the beauty blender, though.
